Examiner: Suzanne Collins dishes on writing ’The Hunger Games’ screenplay with Gary Ross

Posted by amanda in Jun 04, 2011 with No Comments

Now that filming on The Hunger Games movie has gotten underway, author Suzanne Collins has a message to the fans about the movie’s script, and her hand in it.

Collins wrote the original draft of the screenplay, before it was handed off to veteran screenwriter Billy Ray for revisions. When director Gary Ross came on board, he made his own changes to the script based on his vision of the movie. It was through this process that Ross invited Collins to work on the screenplay with him.

In a message posted on the official Hunger Games Facebook page, Collins writes:

We had an immediate and exhilarating creative connection that brought the script to the first day of shooting. Of course, the piece will naturally continue to evolve through the filming, as the actors bring the characters to life, as the entire crew brings their significant talents to the piece, as the editors work with Gary to best realize his vision. The final draft will be on the screen next March.

So that’s been the script process, and as an author, I’m truly grateful for the journey.

Lionsgate also confirmed last week that the script currently being used for production is the draft written by Ross and Collins.

Examiner: Suzanne Collins has no plans for a cameo in ’The Hunger Games’ movie

Posted by amanda in May 05, 2011 with No Comments

Suzanne Collins may be heavily involved in the production of The Hunger Games movie, but shes perfectly content staying behind the scenes. The author tells USA Today, “I have no need to do a cameo.” Because of the futuristic setting, Collins says it would be “alarming” to appear in the movie. Its not uncommon for authors to make brief on-screen appearances in movie adaptations of their books. J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer and Jeff Kinney are just a few who have popped up in their movies.Though she may not be planning an on-screen appearance, Collins has been hard at work with director Gary Ross, putting the finishing touches on the screenplay. She also wrote the original version of the screenplay itself, before it was handed off to Billy Ray for rewrites.Collins has also been heavily involved in the casting process for The Hunger Games movie, set to begin filming at the end of this month.

EW: Team ‘Hunger Games’ talks: Author Suzanne Collins and director Gary Ross on their allegiance to each other, and their actors — EXCLUSIVE

Posted by amanda in Apr 07, 2011 with No Comments

The Hunger Games best-selling author Suzanne Collins and director Gary Ross always figured they’d respect each other well enough. Ross was a passionate fan of her best-selling trilogy; Collins really dug his past films (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville). What they didn’t anticipate was how much they’d instantly trust each other’s vision, to the point where the two were soon meeting for long-past-midnight script writing sessions. In this exclusive conversation with EW, they describe the joy of becoming unexpectedly fierce collaborators throughout every aspect of pre-production — and that includes casting. For all those fans out there who’ve howled with rage and dismay over recent casting announcements, Ross and Collins insist they’ve found the perfect people to bring Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) fully to life. They’ve got their actors’ backs, just as they have each other’s. (Note: SPOILER WARNING — major plot details are discussed below!)

EW: ‘Hunger Games’ author Suzanne Collins talks Jennifer Lawrence

Posted by amanda in Mar 21, 2011 with No Comments

Fans are still buzzing over last week’s news that Jennifer Lawrence has been cast as Katniss Everdeen in the film version of The Hunger Games. EW has received an exclusive statement by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins on Lawrence’s casting. The complete text of the statement follows:

Dear Readers,

We have found Katniss.

As the author, I went into the casting process with a certain degree of trepidation. Believing your heroine can make the leap from the relative safety of the page to the flesh and bones reality of the screen is something of a creative act of faith. But after watching dozens of auditions by a group of very fine young actresses, I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book.  And I’m thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role.

In her remarkable audition piece, I watched Jennifer embody every essential quality necessary to play Katniss. I saw a girl who has the potential rage to send an arrow into the Gamemakers and the protectiveness to make Rue her ally. Who has conquered both Peeta and Gale’s hearts even though she’s done her best to wall herself off emotionally from anything that would lead to romance. Most of all, I believed that this was a girl who could hold out that handful of berries and incite the beaten down districts of Panem to rebel. I think that was the essential question for me. Could she believably inspire a rebellion? Did she project the strength, defiance and intellect you would need to follow her into certain war? For me, she did.

Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this amazing for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.

Thank you all for sharing in this journey and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Love,

Suzanne Collins
